Mercedes will launch B-Class in India by end of this year

B-Class in India

Mercedes-Benz launched the C-Class AMG Performance Edition yesterday for Rs 34.62 lakh (ex-showroom Maharashtra), mainly to maintain the novelty factor as its director competitors are also been refreshed. Audi launched the new A4 sedan few weeks back and the all new BMW 3-Series is just around the corner. Mercedes is currently struggling in the numbers game; they are already third in volume behind BMW and Audi, since they don’t have a volume building car below their executive sedan.

Both the BMW X1 and the recently launched Audi Q3 slot in around Rs 25 lakh, driving their numbers. Unlike its competitors, Mercedes does not have a small SUV and so will occupy the price bracket with the B-Class. The company describes the B-Class as a compact sports tourer, which is actually a big hatchback with decent space and ground clearance.

The B-Class will come to India as CBU (Completely Built Unit), but will be later assembled in India from 2013. This car will initially be offered only in petrol engine and the diesel will follow in few months. The company will also launch the A-Class hatchback in 2013, which will compete with the VW Beetle and the Mini.

As for the B-Class, it is undoubtedly a practical car, but it does not have the SUV stance or size of the X1 and Q3. With its hatch design Mercedes is catering to a different niche, that of the super-luxury hatchback consumer, but will it be able to rack up the numbers like the competition? We will klnow by end of this year.
