Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Tiny is a little desktop launched at Rs 28500 in India

A small little desktop going by the name Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Tiny, has made its way to India for a starting price of Rs 28500. You can say it’s no Apple Mac mini (1.4″ x 7.7″ x 7.7″), but in terms of size, the device does measure just 2.5″ x 7.2″ x 7.16″. That’s a lot of space saving if you compare it to your regular PC tower connected to your monitor.

And it’s pretty reasonably priced too. For the aforementioned amount, you get DOS and Windows 8 platform support. The insides can be lined with an Intel Pentium G3220T/G3420T 35W, Core i3-4330T 35W, Core i3-4130T 35W, Core i5-4570T 35W or Core i7-4765T 35W processor and up to 16GB DDR3 RAM.

The desktop’s graphics muscle comes courtesy of 2013 Intel HD magic. It can be configured with up to 1TB HDD space or 180GB standard SATA SSD memory. Apart from offering several security features, the ThinkCentre M73 Tiny also has two USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet RJ-45 support, a DisplayPort connector, an optional USB 2.0 port, a combined mic/headphone jack and so on.

This Lenovo product’s dimensions we’ve noted above take into account the VESA mount bracket which is bundled in with the package. An Underdesk Mount will also be made available to those willing to part with some extra cash for it. For Rs 28500, buyers only get the desktop. They would have to shell out more money for a monitor, keyboard, mouse and any other add-on they might require for the M73 Tiny.

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Tiny is up for grabs through the company’s official brick-and-mortar stores as well as online outlet. Other authorized resellers in India also have it in stock.

Lenovo signals global ambition with Motorola deal

In 1984, with only $25,000 in Chinese government funding and a dusty 20-square-metre bungalow as their headquarters, a small group of scientists in Beijing founded a firm called New Technology Developer Inc.

Thirty years later, the tech company — which went on to become Legend and later, Lenovo — is the world’s biggest personal computer maker, and has just completed two major deals with IBM and Google that analysts say will help it to diversify away from the sagging PC market and boost its expansion overseas.

Lenovo’s $2.3bn purchase of IBM’s low-end server business and its $2.91bn acquisition of Motorola from Google are evidence of the Chinese tech giant’s “global ambitions”, said Jean-Francois Dufour at DCA Chine-Analyse.

“Just as iPhones and iPads have overtaken Macs in commercial importance for Apple, smartphones and tablets are expected to replace PCs in part for Lenovo,” said Dufour, who called the firm “the pioneer of Chinese companies’ global offensive”.

The back-to-back deals are all the more significant because of their timing, coming just as US President Barack Obama noted in his annual State of the Union address tomorrow that “for the first time in over a decade, business leaders around the world have declared that China is no longer the world’s number one place to invest; America is”.

With Chinese investment in the US doubling to $14bn in 2013, a larger and larger share of that capital is coming from America’s rival across the Pacific — a fact unmentioned by Obama in his speech.

From its humble beginnings, Lenovo has charted an impressive course in the personal computer market. Under its earlier name, Legend, it secured the biggest share in China’s domestic market in 1996 and in the Asia-Pacific region three years later.

Its 2003 decision to change the name of its PC brand from Legend to Lenovo in a bid to boost its sales abroad marked the beginning of its ascent to global preeminence.

That move was followed by a successful 2004 bid to serve as the exclusive computing technology provider for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Games, making it the first Chinese firm to become a major Olympic sponsor.

But it was Lenovo’s 2005 acquisition of IBM’s PC division for $1.75bn that cemented its rise, setting it on track to unseat Hewlett-Packard as the world’s top PC vendor last year.

Lenovo S920 Becomes Official

The previously leaked Lenovo S920 Android smartphone has just become official as the company has already made it available over at their Chinese website although it isn’t shipping yet. The device is pretty impressive and features a 5.3 inch display, runs on Android Jelly Bean, and comes with a quad core processor.

Lenovo S920 Technical Specifications

    Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
    5.3 inch HD (1280 x 720) display
    1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor
    1GB of RAM
    16GB of internal storage
    micro-SD support
    8 megapixel rear camera
    2 megapixel front camera
    2,250 mAh battery

When the Lenovo S920 hits the market early April it is going to be the first device of the company to run on Jelly Bean. One thing interesting about this model is that its back part looks similar to that of the HTC One. That’s as far as the similarities go as the rest of the design is quite different. It’s also just 7.9 mm thin making it one of the thinnest devices available in the market.

Based on its specifications this device is capable of standing next to the Samsung Galaxy Note II. The price will be less than the Note II though since its only using a MediaTek processor.

What we are concerned though is the battery life of this device since it only sports a 2,250 mAh battery.

Lenovo has not made any announcement yet if they will release this device in the global market. One thing is for sure though; it will soon be released in China.

Another device which the company is also ex
pected to release is the Lenovo S820 which was spotted weeks ago. There is no information yet regarding the specifications of this device other than the fact that it appears to look similar to the HTC One.

Lenovo entering 'PC plus' era, CEO says

China's Lenovo Group Ltd, on track to become the world's No.1 personal computer maker, is leveraging on what it calls the "PC plus" era as the company ramps up its plant capacity in major markets including the United States.

PC demand growth has waned over the past year as more consumers flock to ultraportable and increasingly powerful tablets and smartphones for basic computing.

Hewlett Packard (HP), Dell and other stalwarts of the PC industry are now fighting to sustain growth as tablet computers eat into their PC-related businesses. But PCs aren't disappearing anytime soon.

"We don't live in a post-PC world," Lenovo Chief Executive Yuanqing Yang said in an interview in Las Vegas on Wednesday. "We are entering the PC plus era."

Yang said it is a post-PC world for one group: companies that do not innovate in PCs. "In our industry many players think PCs have become a commodity product," he said. "We have never thought this way."

Lenovo, he said, has redefined the category with products like Yoga, a laptop running Microsoft Corp's Windows 8 that can be converted to a tablet PC by flipping the screen all the way backwards, and Twist, another laptop that has a screen connected through a hinge.

The two laptops have had brisk sales in the United States with Lenovo capturing 40 percent consumer market share in the $900 and above category.
Lenovo vaulted into the PC market by buying IBM's personal computer division in 2005. It has become a force through aggressive pricing, overseas acquisitions and taking advantage of a fast-growing home market.

Lenovo is lagging HP in PC shipments in the third quarter by less than half a percentage point, according to IDC, a consultancy. IDC placed HP at the No.1 spot with a 15.9 percent market share, marginally ahead of Lenovo's 15.7 percent share. But Gartner, a rival to IDC, said Lenovo held the lead, with a 15.7 percent market share in the third quarter of 2012 compared to HP's 15.5 percent.

A year earlier, HP held a 17 percent market share while Lenovo held 13.1 percent, Gartner said. In the third quarter of 2010, Lenovo ranked fourth with 10.4 percent, trailing HP with 17.5 percent, Acer with 13.1 percent, and Dell with 12.2 percent. "Now we are nurturing new areas including smartphones and tablets," Yang said. "We have focused on this change for many years. We have prepared for this trend."
