The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has come up with a $22,000-per person presidential suite package for an eight-day cross-country journey to heritage and tourist destinations.
“A minimum new entry level price of $3,580 (Rs1.9 lakh) has been set for the four-day journey in deluxe cabin, and for an eight-day journey in deluxe cabin, prices have been reduced from $7,160 to $6,360 (Rs3.9 lakh to Rs3.5 lakh),” an IRCTC official said.
“For the coming season, the train will be undertaking five new journeys on four routes, which will include two journeys of four days each with a view to meet the long-felt demand for shorter, and comparatively cheaper, journeys. So far, the train has only been undertaking eight-day journeys, which also meant that the cost was much higher,” he added.
IRCTC officials are hopeful of more people, especially Indians, opting for the shorter journeys on popular routes. The train will now cover new destinations, such as Ajanta Caves, a Unesco world heritage site, and Balasinor in Gujarat, one of the largest clutch of dinosaur hatcheries in the world.
Maharajas’ Express features four cabin configurations — deluxe, junior suite, suite and presidential suite. Every cabin has large windows giving a panoramic view. All passenger carriages come with individual temperature controls, the first-of-its-kind in India, and have state-of-the-art facilities, such as live television, DVD players, WiFi, to keep passengers entertained throughout theroyal journey.
The train also has CCTV cameras, smoke alarms, mini pantries with a 24-hour valet service, and round the clock paramedic services.
