Kerala Tourism launches mobile-based services for tourists

Kerala Tourism launched mobile-based services and IT-enabled projects to enable travellers explore destinations without external guides. A P Anil Kumar, Minister for Tourism, Govt of Kerala, launched the new set of products – mobile website, WAP guide, applications for Android and IOS, and Bluetooth Kiosks at a function in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday. ``Kerala is the first state in the country to adopt such mobile-based services for the benefit of the tourism industry. Kerala Tourism won five awards last year itself for its IT-driven initiatives, recognising the efforts of the state in the sector,’’ said Kumar .

The WAP guide can replace the tourist guides saving money and easing communication.``The government is trying to spur the growth of the tourism industry in line with the changes around. We are trying to translate these advances in technology to make the stay of tourists more pleasant and make their lives simpler during the travel,’’ he pointed out. He informed that the new set of products will provide all necessary information to the tourists at their finger tips. “This kind of technology will drive the growth of the industry and open new marketing avenues, apart from giving valuable information,’’ he said.

The two mobile applications will cater to IOS and Android. The smart phone identifies the location and shows the tourists things around. Features like `Places of Interest’ or `Tourist Guide’ offer tourists the interesting travel spots within Kerala. There is a tour planner option available. A travel plan is being prepared exclusively for the tourists, based on the timings, locations and interests.  Another feature is the continuous tourism updates in line with the information on the tourism website and events. There is also share option where travellers can share pictures and messages.

The Bluetooth Kiosks provide real-time information to the tourists landing in Kerala. The Bluetooth Kiosks, to be set-up at places like international airport will provide comprehensive information about Kerala and its tourism.
