A new research study has indicated that iPad buyers are mainly using the tablet for browsing the Internet and entertainment activities such as video and music playback.
According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, which conducted a survey of more than 1,000 iPad buyers earlier this year, around 40 percent responded that they will be using the device for Web browsing. Entertainment, which includes watching videos, listening to music and looking at photos, took second spot at around 33 percent. Rounding up the top three activities is gaming, with around 27 percent of buyers.
Surprisingly, only 11 percent of owners indicated that they use the iPad to connect to social networks. Reading e-books or magazines also featured low on the list, with only 8 percent of respondents.
This study reinforces the impression that tablets are primarily media consumption devices. While iPad usage in business is increasing--owners of the latest iPad are especially likely to use it for business--it is still only lagging behind leisure activities.
It could also indicate that 7-inch tablets, which are even more skewed toward entertainment, are here to stay. The Google Nexus 7 has been doing well since its launch and Apple, too, is rumored to produce a smaller iPad later this year.
