According to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) MBit index, a report on mobile broadband performance in India, the total 2G and 3G mobile data has witnessed a 54% increase during the period December 2011 and June 2012 in India.
The MBit Index, which has been created by tracking the actual data payload generated between December 2011 and June 2012 on all 2G and 3G networks, has scrutinized data traffic at a pan-India level.
The study indicates that mobile data usage is constantly doubling every 12-14 months in India and is expected to be the next big “growth driver”. The study also points out that the data services’ growth is owing to the increasing demand for the internet in India.
According to the findings in the last seven months, 3G services have witnessed 78% growth, compared to 47% in 2G. Although, 2G accounts for 3/4th of total mobile data, the market share of 3G services has grown expediently, says the study.
The study also points out that the recent reduction in 3G tariffs announced by various telcos has helped the uptake. According to MBit Index from May-June 2012, 3G traffic grew by 17%, owing to operators reducing 3G services tariff in May.
Moreover, what is even more alarming for telecom majors is that mobile data usage is growing the fastest in category B and C circles, indicating a demand for broadband services.
