A production version of Lamborghini’s Urus SUV is likely to appear by 2016, according to reports out of Europe this week.
Speaking with UK mag Autocar at the annual Audi brand group conference, Audi boss Rupert Stadler confirmed the model is due for approval before year's end.
“Lamborghini has to do it," Stadler said. "Because of the need to dovetail into production cycles, we should see the Urus in 2017.”
This could mean a late 2016 motor show appearance, before going on sale in key international markets.
Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winklemann highlighted the lightweight technology destined for Urus and other future Lamborghini and Audi models, which will combine extruded, cast, and pressed aluminium with conventional steel.
A new moulded carbon fibre process is also expected to feature, which significantly reduces the material’s production cost over conventional hand-laid carbon fibre matting.
This technology will reportedly be incorporated into an updated version of Audi’s MLB architecture for the production Urus, which is also expected to underpin future Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne models.
The production Urus’ motive source is yet to be confirmed, but a twin-turbo V8 related to Audi’s RS 6 is one of the likely options.
