Websites preferred destination for online shopping than apps for smartphones owners


Despite the new applications being developed websites continue to be the preferred choice for online shopping for smartphones owners. In India smartphones’ popularity is growing day by day.


This has been revealed in Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights in October 2012.  Over 10,000 smartphone-users participated in the survey.


The study says that online shopping is preferred over shopping apps by 25 per cent of smartphone-users in India.


It observes that apps are more useful for the smartphones users for accessing contents but for online shopping websites get the preference.


"When it comes to accessing content on the smartphone, there has been an increasing preference for apps over websites. However, in the shopping genre, the smartphone audience still prefers websites," the study said.


It feels that shopping apps are yet to take firm roots in the country and are still on nascent stage attracting only 3 per cent of smartphone users while 1 in 4 (25 per cent) smartphone users access shopping websites at least once a month, clearly indicating a preference for the website platform


The study also reveals that majority of smartphone-users aged over 40 years, access shopping properties at least once a month while a greater percentage of smartphone-users aged between 25 and 35 years go for the  m-commerce. Of these, 8 per cent said that they have made online purchases on their devices, which is higher than any other age group.


In terms of popularity the online shopping portal Flipkart with 5 per cent is ranked number one is followed by eBay at 4 per cent. But for shopping apps eBay has grabbed top slot followed by Flipkart.
