Videos to drive mobile data usage in three years

Video content will account for over half of all mobile data consumption in the country in the next two to three years, consultancy Deloitte has said in its latest report on India's technology, media and telecommunication sector.

Deloitte India's forecast for 2014 is based on improved network connectivity and an expected doubling of smart phone users in urban India to 104 million this year.

"We anticipate 50 per cent-60 per cent of all the mobile data consumption in India to be driven by video over next two-three years," Deloitte India senior director PN Sudarshan said, adding that local language content will play a crucial role. The report says that growth of direct-to-home (DTH) and digital cable, emergence of sports other than cricket, social media and phablets will boost the country's media and entertainment and telecommunication segments. Deloitte expects consolidation inthe DTH segment in the next two years.

"There is a huge scope for growth for the DTH players, specially in phases III and IV, but the key is how they play out their schemes in the semi-urban areas," said Ashesh Jani, partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells. While instant messaging service on mobile phones is seen winning the battle for volumes, short messaging service is expected to lead in revenues.
