Nikon has announced the launch of its flagship full-frame camera, the Nikon D4S in India. At an event held in New Delhi yesterday, Nikon announced the D4S alongwith the entry level D3300. The D4s is an upgrade of its former full-frame flagship model – the D4. According to Nikon, the D4S offers improvements in areas such as autofocus performance, image quality, movie recording and so on over its predecessor.

The D4S houses a new 16.12MP full-frame sensor along with a new EXPEED 4 image-processing engine. The native ISO range goes from ISO 100 to ISO 25,600, but Nikon D4S supports extended sensitivities which can give an equivalent low ISO of 50 and a equivalent high ISO going to 409,600.

On the AF front, the D4S has added in a fifth AF-area mode called Group Area AF which uses 5 focus points: one specified by the user, as well as one each above, below, to the left, and to the right of the selected focus point. This is in addition to the four AF area modes seen on the D4, namely: Single-point AF; Dynamic-area AF; 3D tracking and Auto-area AF.

This one supports movie recording at a frame size of 1920 × 1080 with a frame rate of 50p or 60p and the movies recorded at a 1920 × 1080 crop setting exhibit especially sharp and clear picture quality.

Nikon promises a faster work flow during and after capture. In addition to shooting JPEGs, full size RAW and TIFF files, Nikon D4S has added a RAW SIZE S. This setting allows for shooting 12-bit uncompressed Nikon NEF files that are approximately half the size (2464 x 1640) of standard uncompressed RAW files. Secondly, when connected via LAN, users can transmit using Gigabit Ethernet. The EN-EL18a battery is rated for around 3020 shots on a single-mode and 5960 shots in continuous mode. Finally, the D4S uses a dual slot for CF cards as well as the XQD cards. All these factors promise to sa
ve on the workflow time as compared to the the D4.

Commenting at the launch, Mr. Hiroshi Takashina, Managing Director, Nikon India said, “Today’s announcement reiterates our commitment to offer products that exhibit exceptional performance and image quality in challenging environments. Our D-SLR camera business has become more successful than ever with over 20% growth over the last year. With these latest offerings in the D-SLR range, our aim is to enliven the basic principles of trustworthiness and creativity that Nikon as a brand stands for.”
