Hero MotoCorp eyes bigger share of high-end bike market

NEW DELHI: After dominating the entry-level motorcycle market, Hero MotoCorp is moving for a bigger share of the higher-end segment. The company, that dominates the entry-end of the market with its Splendor and Passion models, launched the 125cc Ignitor with a starting price of Rs 55,900 (ex-showroom Delhi).

The company had showcased the Ignitor at the Delhi Auto Expo this year and the bike will compete with models from Bajaj Auto and Hero's erstwhile partner Honda.

"Every new launch of Hero MotoCorp flows from a clear strategy to further consolidate our position across segments. With Ignitor, we aim to bolster our presence in the growing deluxe segment," said Anil Dua, Sr. V-P incharge of marketing & sales.

The Ignitor is the third new product launched by Hero MotoCorp over the last few months. The others include Impulse trans-roader motorcycle and Maestro scooter.

The company is also slated to launch a new version of its Passion model later this year.

Hero MotoCorp already has bikes in the 125cc segment — Glamour and the Super Splendor.

The company, that split with long-time partner Honda about a year back, has seen first quarter (April-June) sales at 16.42 lakh units against 15.29 lakh units in the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

Hero MotoCorp will be investing over Rs 2,500 crore in setting up new plants, expanding capacity at existing locations and in building an integrated R&D centre. While one plant will come up at Neemrana in Rajasthan, the other will be in Gujarat.
