IN A BID to ensure safety and customer satisfaction, automobile industry body SIAM on Monday announced a voluntary vehicle recall policy, which recommends the government to take action if any of its members fail to announce a recall despite ‘clear evidence’.
SIAM said that this ‘Voluntary Code on Vehicle Recall’ is effective from 1 July 2012 onwards and that it would assess the need for a mandatory policy if the government decides to frame one, although it would not oppose such a move.
SIAM President S Sandilya said, “We believe in a voluntary policy, but the government could regulate if a company does not follow self-regulation. We are not against regulation but we need to assess its need,” he said.
Under the policy applicable for all manufacturers, from two-wheelers to commercial vehicles, if a company is of the opinion that there is a manufacturing defect that compromises on safety of vehicles, it will voluntarily rectify the problem free of cost.
Only vehicles within seven years of manufacture would be covered under the policy and companies are required to post information regarding recall on their websites.
Sandilya, said, “If a manufacturer fails to announce a recall where evidence is available as per recall guidelines, the government may issue directions to vehicle manufacturers.”
