The Apple vs Google war just got dirtier. When Apple released iOS 6, for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, it removed Google Maps and replaced it with its own in-built maps application. And now it appears that the built-in YouTube App won’t be available for users as well.
According the New York Times On Monday, Apple released a test version of its coming iOS 6 operating system, which powers iPads and iPhones, and developers promptly noticed that the YouTube app was missing from its lineup of built-in apps.
YouTube’s in built-app had been a part of the original iPhone and now suddenly Apple has decided not to include it, leading to rumours that this is part of the growing wars between Apple and Google, which owns YouTube. Apple’s founder Steve Jobs felt that Google had cheated them when they released Android, the rival iOS and was quoted as saying that he was willing to go ‘thermonuclear’ against Google.
According to an official statement, Apple said,
Our licensing to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended. Customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be in the App Store.
But is this such a bad idea ? According to Nilay Patel at The Verge, this might not be such a bad thing for Google as it can now update the app more frequently and thus improve user experience.
YouTube also responded to the news stating: “We are working with Apple to ensure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users.”
