Mercedes-Benz to enter premium segment with A-Class

Mercedes-Benz India on Friday said though the environment in the automobile industry is still challenging, it sees growth with new launches lined up.

“”We are okay with our positioning in the Indian market and we have some interesting launches in the premium segment. We will enter the premium segment with A-Class this summer,” Eberhard H. Kern, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mercedes-Benz India, told reporters here.

He said though the A-Class will enter the Indian market for the first time, it will be a refreshed version. The compact sports utility vehicle will compete with BMW’s X1.

Eberhard said the company will launch new GL, CLA, E-Class and diesel variant of the B-Class within this calendar year. The launches will start next month.

Meanwhile, he also said the company supports Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on not including automobile sector in the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union.

He said the company may consider making its facility at Chakan, Maharashtra, as an export destination if FTA comes into effect for the auto sector.

Mercedes-Benz India inaugurated its largest showroom in the country built in an area of 60,000 sq ft in New Delhi. It has spent Rs 70 crore on the new showroom.
