Grand Theft Auto V delayed until September

Say sayonara to a spring release date: Developer Rockstar Games has announced it pushed back the release date of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V to September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

A Rockstar blog post noted the violent open-world adventure game "needs a little more polish to be of the standard we, and more importantly, you require."

It only took several hours for the blog post to receive 2,500 comments from passionate fans of the series, and as expected, many of those comments contained colorful words that heavily criticized the delay of GTA V. The negative response got so heated that a Rockstar representative amended the blog post asking the community to calm their "abusive" comments.

Several hours later, Rockstar added a second comment in response to apparent "conspiracy theories," once again affirming it delayed the game only because "we want the game to be as good as it needs to be" and there wasn't an "ulterior motive for this delay."

Following today's announcement, parent company Take-Two Interactive saw its shares slide nearly 7 percent to close at $12.17.

GTA V will be five times the size of Red Dead Redemption and take place in the fictional city of Los Santos, which is loosely based on Los Angeles. Players will take on the role of three separate characters -- a first for the franchise -- and alternate among each. Michael, Trevor, and Franklin each possess a different skill set and will need to work together to pull off what Rockstar is calling "a series of heists." When not involved in a specific mission, players will have the option to assume each of their identities at will.
