Oppo’s N1 with 13MP rotating camera to launch in India on 30 Jan

Popular Chinese electronics brand Oppo has announced its entry into India and the company is holding a press event on January 30 to mark the occasion. Oppo has also started a Twitter account for the India division and it has been posting tweets about the N1, so we are guessing it’s time for the biggest Oppo phone to hit the Indian market.

The N1 was launched with much fanfare in China last year and till date remains the only phone to officially ship with popular aftermarket Android ROM, CyanogenMod. As such there are two versions of the phone and in India, both versions might arrive simultaneously, although Oppo has not confirmed anything as yet. If not running CM out of the box, it will run Oppo’s Color OS, based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, featuring quite a few so-called design ‘improvements’ over Google’s vanilla UI.

The stand-out feature of the N1 is the rotating camera module, similar to the one seen on the Gionee Elife E7, though N1 did come to the market first in China. The smartphone comes with a 5.9-inch 1080p IPS display and is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 600 SoC clocked at 1.7GHz. It also features a healthy 2GB of RAM, and 16GB or 32GB of internal memory. Both storage options might not make their way to India. The smartphone will come packing a massive 3610mAh battery, so there’s little to worry about it terms of usage time.

The 13MP camera with CMOS sensor and f/2.0 aperture is impressive in itself, but there’s a specially-designed Fujitsu IPS imaging chip. The camera has a 6-piece lens design, which Oppo says is the first of its kind on Android. The entire camera rotates 206 degrees allowing it to act as a front-facing camera as well. Oppo says the rotation has been tested 100,000 times and this means you can swivel it 40 times a day for 7 years. There’s a dual-mode flash as well designed to work for front and back shots. The N1 has a touch panel on the back, which allows users to perform various tasks with some gestures. This includes taking a selfie with a tap on the back.

The smartphone also comes with ‘O Click’, a Bluetooth accessory that can be attached in a keyring and can be used to take pictures remotely or sound an alarm if you can’t find the phone. This accessory might not be made available in India immediately. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone has quadband GSM and pentaband HSPA+ support, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, NFC GPS and Bluetooth 4.0 support.
