While electric cars usually draw in the green and the cost conscious, Mahindra begs to differ and has unveiled the Halo which is literally electric in performance and propulsion.
Looking all compact under wraps, the crowd was going impatient as Mahindra was about the lift the wraps of what will be India’s first electric sportscar. Once off, the Halo as Mahindra calls it, came out to be an extremely well designed (very Lotus-ish though) and extremely well proportioned sportscar. Mahindra REVA designers have deliberately opted for a more rounded and conventional shape to establish an image of practicality.
Powering the Mahindra Halo will be an electric motor developing approximately 140bhp which gives the car enough thrust to hit the 100 km/h in under 8 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h and at the same time provide a range of 200 km on a full charge. This next generation connected electric vehicle has advanced safety features, dual touchscreen infotainment system and high end connectivity. The Halo is built in India and designed at Mahindra Reva studio, is Mahindra’s technology demonstrator for the fast growing electric global car market.
The other two electric cars on display was an all-electric version of the Mahindra Verito, which has a claimed range of 80km and a top speed of 85kph, as well as an updated version of the Mahindra e2o electric city car. This new e2o gets a new ‘Quick Charge’ port for even faster charging, and this also lets customers use the car’s battery to power their home in the event of a power cut – a common problem in several parts of India.
